Chincholi sits on the Deccan plateau in the Kalaburagi district of northern Karnataka. From above, the town is a small, dense knot of streets. Most lanes run briefly between low buildings before they open onto cultivated land. The pattern is irregular rather than planned, and a few main roads carry traffic out towards neighbouring villages and district towns.
Just beyond the built-up area the land turns rougher. The Chincholi Wildlife Sanctuary protects dry deciduous forest on the higher ground nearby, and on a map that shows up as an unbroken stretch without a road grid. The contrast between the tight town centre and the empty forest land is one of the more striking things about the place in black and white.
