Chintamani lies on the Deccan plateau in Chikkaballapur district, in the southeastern corner of Karnataka, not far from the border with Andhra Pradesh. The land here is gently rolling, and the town's map shows a dense centre with roads radiating toward surrounding villages and the district's other towns across a dry, open landscape.
Like much of this part of Karnataka, the area around Chintamani depends on tanks, the traditional reservoirs built to catch monsoon rain.
