Chiquimula lies in eastern Guatemala, in a valley surrounded by dry hills and known for its hot climate. Its centre follows the colonial pattern common in Central American towns: a grid of square blocks around a central plaza, with a church and civic buildings along its sides.
The town is sometimes called the "Pearl of the East" and serves as a regional centre on the routes toward Esquipulas, with its famous basilica, and toward the Honduran border and the ruins of Copán. Remains of an older colonial church, damaged by earthquakes in the eighteenth century, still stand in the town.
A Chiquimula map poster shows the regular colonial grid at the centre, the looser streets at the edges and the roads leading out through the valley. The surrounding hills leave open ground around the town, so the settlement stands out clearly on the page.
