The four avenues
Wide avenues enclose the central city in a rectangle, giving the core a crisp frame that makes Christchurch instantly recognisable from above.

Christchurch Map Poster & Print
The centre of Christchurch was planned around 1850 as a near-regular grid, bounded by wide avenues that form a clear frame on the map. Cathedral Square sits at the middle, and a pair of diagonal streets cuts across the grid toward it. Through this orderly layout winds the Avon River, known in Māori as Ōtākaro, looping lazily across the blocks and ignoring the straight lines around it.
To the west, Hagley Park occupies an enormous stretch of open ground, bringing a large blank space into the composition, with the Botanic Gardens wrapped in a bend of the river. Suburbs spread across the flat Canterbury Plains, and to the south the Port Hills rise abruptly. A Christchurch map poster shows this contrast between ruler-straight streets, a meandering river and the curves of volcanic hills.
Christchurch is often called the Garden City. The earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 badly damaged the central city, and much of the land along the lower Avon was later cleared, leaving a broad green corridor toward the estuary. Beyond the Port Hills lies Lyttelton Harbour, the flooded crater of an extinct volcano, reached from the city through a road tunnel.

Hagley Park
A large public park west of the centre, crossed by a few roads and bordered by the Avon. On the poster it appears as a broad open field beside the grid.
Avon River
The river meanders from the western suburbs through the centre and out to the estuary, drawing a soft, looping line across an otherwise regular grid.

Miért Christchurch?
Egy térkép, ami jelent valamit
Christchurch has changed a great deal in recent years, and many people want to remember the city as they knew it, or mark the place they helped rebuild. The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised with names and dates.
The grid works especially well in Blueprint, while Paper and Sand suit the garden character. Classic black & white and Noir complete the choice. HD files are $9, and printed posters on matte paper with an optional wooden frame ship from print partners in 30+ countries.
