Chrzanów sits in the western part of Lesser Poland, roughly halfway between Kraków and the Silesian cities. From above, the town has a clear centre. A historic market square holds the middle, and short streets run out from it before giving way to post-war housing blocks, garden plots and patches of forest on the gentle hills around.
The town grew with industry, and the plan still shows it. Railway tracks cut across the southern and western edges, and long factory sites sit near them. Chrzanów is best known as the home of Fablok, the locomotive works founded here in 1919, which for decades built steam engines for Polish railways and export markets. The industrial ground and the old centre make two different patterns on the same sheet.
