Colina lies in Chacabuco province, just north of Santiago, in a wide farming valley enclosed by hills and the foothills of the Andes. On a map the old town appears as a compact grid in the centre of the commune. Roads lead out from it across a patchwork of fields, orchards and newer housing toward the surrounding hills.
In recent decades the southern part of the commune, especially the area known as Chicureo, has become one of the fastest-growing residential zones around Santiago. It is filled with gated communities, curving roads and large new developments. The contrast between that suburban pattern and the traditional grid of old Colina gives the map two distinct characters within one frame.
Colina also has a long tradition of hot springs at the Termas de Colina, in the hills to the east. Highways link the commune directly to the capital and to the north. In the south of the commune, Chicureo is filled with curving streets and gated neighbourhoods. This looser, more organic pattern stands out clearly against the older grid.
