Cordenons lies immediately northeast of Pordenone in Friuli Venezia Giulia, so closely joined that on a map the two built-up areas run into one another. The land here is the flat western Friulian plain, and the town's streets spread in a loose web from its historic centre, with long straight roads leading off across fields toward neighbouring villages.
The area sits along the line of resurgence springs, where water that has sunk into the gravel plain further north returns to the surface. These springs feed small streams and wetlands, some now protected as nature areas. To the north and east, the drier gravel expanses known as magredi, shaped by the Cellina and Meduna rivers, form one of the most distinctive landscapes in the region.
