Dongfeng is a county town under Liaoyuan, in the south of Jilin province, where the plains of the northeast begin to fold into low, wooded hills. From above, the urban area is a tight cluster of blocks on a valley floor, with roads running out along the lower ground toward villages and fields. The line between built streets and farmland is clear, which gives the map a crisp outline.
The county is widely associated with sika deer farming, which has shaped its rural economy for generations. It is also known for Dongfeng peasant painting, a folk art tradition of bright, detailed village scenes.
