Freiburg Map Poster & Print
Freiburg im Breisgau lies in the southwest corner of Germany, where the Dreisam valley opens out of the Black Forest onto the Upper Rhine plain. On the map, the historic centre forms a compact, roughly oval shape around the cathedral. Ring roads follow the line of the old walls, and the wooded Schlossberg rises directly to the east.
The old town is laced with Bächle, small open water channels running along the streets and fed from the Dreisam. Freiburg Minster, with its open-work Gothic spire, stands in the market square at the centre. The city is also known for sustainable planning, especially the Vauban district, built on a former military site with car-reduced streets and solar housing.
A Freiburg map poster captures the shift from dense medieval streets to the gentler grids of newer quarters, and then to the forested hills that frame the city to the east. The Dreisam runs along the south side of the centre, and the railway runs north to south along its western edge, giving the plan two firm lines.

Schlossberg
The wooded hill rises right beside the centre. Its paths and slopes form a soft, organic contrast to the tight streets below.
Vauban district
A well-known eco-district on the site of former barracks, laid out with compact rows of housing, car-reduced streets and green space between them.
