Fulham lies in southwest London, on the north bank of the Thames, where the river bends in a wide curve toward Putney. On a map the district is framed by water on two sides, and inside that curve the streets form a tight, regular pattern of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, crossed by long roads such as Fulham Road and Fulham Palace Road.
Fulham Palace, for centuries a home of the Bishops of London, sits by the river beside Bishop's Park. Just to the north is Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC, with one of the most distinctive riverside settings in English football, while Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's ground, lies on the district's eastern edge. Putney Bridge links the area across the Thames.
