Garching bei München sits just north of the Bavarian capital, and its map has two distinct parts. The old town is a compact cluster of streets around a traditional centre, while to the northeast lies the research campus, a large area of institutes, laboratories and faculty buildings set out on open ground near the Isar.
The campus is home to much of the Technical University of Munich, several Max Planck institutes and the FRM II research neutron source. Its best-known building is the Atom Egg, the egg-shaped dome of Germany's first research reactor from 1957, which now appears on the town's coat of arms. The U6 underground line ends here, linking the campus directly to central Munich.
A Garching map poster shows that contrast clearly: the older, irregular town streets next to the wide, orthogonal campus with its large building footprints and service roads. The Isar and its floodplain woods run along the eastern side, while the motorway and the underground line frame the approach from the city.
