Gourette sits in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, within the commune of Eaux-Bonnes, at the head of a narrow valley off the Ossau. From above, the resort appears as a tight knot of buildings at the bottom of a steep amphitheatre of peaks. The ski runs rise from it on all sides, following the natural hollows of the mountain.
The road that runs through Gourette climbs on to the Col d'Aubisque, one of the most famous passes in the Tour de France. On the map its hairpins are the most striking man-made line in the landscape: a road looping back and forth up the slope before cutting across the open mountainside toward the pass.
