Hà Tĩnh is the capital of Hà Tĩnh Province in north-central Vietnam, where the country narrows between the Annamite mountains and the South China Sea, known in Vietnam as the East Sea. The city stands on flat land a short distance inland from the coast. From above it looks compact: a central grid of streets and government buildings surrounded by rice paddies, ponds and small rivers.
The province lies on Vietnam's main north–south route, and National Route 1 runs past the city, carrying traffic between Hanoi and the south. Newer neighbourhoods have grown along the main roads, so the map shows straight axes reaching into open countryside. Water shapes the rest: channels, lakes and low fields that flood in the rainy season.
