Hinsdale is a village in the western suburbs of Chicago, lying mostly in DuPage County with a portion in Cook County. It grew in the second half of the nineteenth century as a commuter settlement along the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and that origin still shapes the map. The rail line crosses the village from east to west, with the downtown gathered closely around the station.
North and south of the tracks, streets form a loose grid that softens into gentler curves in the older residential areas. Large lots and mature trees give the village a spacious look from above, and parks are scattered through the neighbourhoods rather than concentrated in one place. Major roads such as Ogden Avenue mark the northern edge of the core.
