Iruma lies in southwestern Saitama Prefecture, where the Kanto plain begins to meet the hills to the west. The Iruma River runs through the city, and its streets spread across the ground on either side. Residential neighbourhoods form a fine, irregular mesh around the stations, and the outer areas open into fields and wooded slopes.
Iruma is part of the Sayama tea region, one of Japan's northernmost major tea-growing areas, and neat rows of tea bushes are part of its landscape. Iruma Air Base of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force occupies a large site at the city's edge. Its runway forms a long straight line on the map, and the base holds a popular annual air show.
