Itapiranga is at the far western tip of Santa Catarina, on the Uruguay River, which forms the border with Argentina here. From above, the river is the dominant feature. It is a broad, curving band along the edge of the municipality, and the town's streets sit on the rising ground above it. The area was settled in the twentieth century largely by families of German descent, and that heritage still shapes local culture and festivals. The town itself is compact.
