A compressed core
With so little flat land, the central streets sit close together. On the poster this makes a small, dark knot of lines that anchors the whole composition.

Jianshan Map Poster & Print
Jianshan lies in the rugged north-east of Chongqing municipality, in country shaped by steep hills, deep valleys and the river systems that feed the Yangtze. Flat land is scarce here, and the town's plan shows it. Streets bunch together wherever the ground eases, and roads approach in long curves that follow the slopes.
On a map, a place like this looks very different from the regular grids of China's plains. The pattern is irregular and dense in places. The streets look pressed together, and the roads are forced into bends by the terrain around them. Even without the relief drawn in, the hills show through the way the lines behave.
A Jianshan map poster reduces all of this to black and white. What's left is a record of how a settlement fits itself into difficult ground. The composition is uneven in a good way, with a tight core, winding approach roads and wide empty margins where the mountains take over. Up close there's a lot of detail, and from a distance it reads as calm and balanced.

Serpentine approach roads
Roads come into town in long, looping curves that follow the valleys and hillsides. They trace the landscape around them even though no elevation is drawn.
Open mountain margins
Around the settlement, the map empties out into wide white space where the slopes are too steep to build on. This gives the town room and makes its shape easy to read.

Miért Jianshan?
Egy térkép, ami jelent valamit
Mountain towns make striking maps because the terrain writes itself into the street pattern. This one suits people with family roots in the Chongqing hills, anyone who has travelled through the region, and anyone drawn to maps where the land clearly dictates the layout.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the town's name in Chinese characters or a date that matters to you. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. A free 900 px watermarked preview lets you check the layout before you buy.
