Karīmnagar lies in northern Telangana on the banks of the Manair River, a tributary of the Godavari. The older core is dense and irregular, with market streets meeting at busy junctions, while newer colonies spread outward along the main roads to Hyderabad, Warangal and other towns in the region. Around the city the land is scattered with the granite outcrops typical of the Deccan plateau.
On the city's edge, the Lower Manair Dam holds back a wide reservoir whose irregular shoreline dominates one side of the map. Karīmnagar is also known for its silver filigree, a delicate craft protected by a geographical indication, and for the granite quarried in the surrounding district and shipped far beyond it.
