Karur sits on the plains of western Tamil Nadu, where the Amaravathi River flows north to meet the Kaveri. From above, the town grows out from the south bank of the Amaravathi. Its older core packs short lanes tightly around the temple district, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the roads to Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Dindigul and Erode.
Karur is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the region and appears in early Tamil literature as a Chera centre. Today it is best known for its home textiles. Handloom and powerloom units make bed linen, curtains and table covers for export, and the town is also a long-established centre for building bus and truck bodies.

Temple town core
The oldest part of Karur is a close weave of narrow streets around its principal Shiva temple. The lines grow noticeably finer and denser here than in the newer residential areas outside it.
Radiating highways
National and state highways leave Karur toward Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Madurai and Coimbatore. They form clear spokes on the map that carry development out into the surrounding fields.
