Końskie is a town of about twenty thousand people in the northern part of the Świętokrzyskie region of central Poland, and the seat of its own county. From above, it reads as a small, legible place. A central core of short streets gathers around the old market area, and the main roads leave it in several directions toward neighbouring towns and villages.
Its best-known feature is the palace and park complex associated with the Małachowski family, a classicist residence set in historic parkland with garden pavilions, including one designed in an Egyptian style. On a map, the park shows up as a large, softly shaped open area close to the centre. Its paths and water features give a gentler texture than the tighter street blocks around it.
