Macenta lies in the Forest Region of south-eastern Guinea, not far from the border with Liberia. The terrain is hilly and well wooded, and the town has grown to match it. From above, its streets curve around the rises and follow the lines of valleys, and the main roads leave the town by winding routes rather than straight lines.
The prefecture around Macenta is agricultural, with crops grown in clearings among the forest, and the town serves as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding villages.
