Madhupur lies in Jharkhand's Deoghar district, on the undulating edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau. On a map the railway is the clearest line: the main line crosses the town, and a branch line leaves from it towards Giridih. Roads run out from the station area, and the lanes around them are loosely packed and not laid out on a grid.
For generations, Bengali families came here from Kolkata for a change of air, and many built bungalows in walled gardens on the town's outskirts. From above, those plots appear as larger, softer blocks between the denser bazaar streets. Around them the ground opens into fields, scrub and scattered ponds, and the built-up area thins out without any sharp edge.
