Mairi lies in the interior of Bahia, in the dry sertão country well away from the Atlantic coast. On a map the town appears as a compact knot of streets surrounded by open land, with rural roads fanning out across the municipality toward farms and smaller settlements. No coastline or large river organises the plan, so the street pattern itself carries the whole composition.
At the centre, blocks sit close together around the older core, then loosen at the edges into longer plots and unpaved tracks.
