Ridge-and-valley roads
Roads follow the contours of the hills and bend around slopes. On the poster they form flowing curves instead of a regular grid.

Manikchari Map Poster & Print
Manikchari is an upazila town in the Khagrachari Hill District, part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeastern Bangladesh. It looks very different from the flat, river-dominated plains that cover most of the country. Around Manikchari the ground folds into low hills and narrow valleys, and the map follows those folds. Roads bend constantly, and buildings line the lower ground.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts are home to several indigenous communities as well as Bengali settlers, and the region has its own distinct culture and landscape. On a street map this shows up as a pattern rather than a symbol. Settlement is linear and follows the valleys, streams cut through it, and the roads are fitted to the slopes instead of laid out in straight lines.
A Manikchari map poster shows a town that has adapted to its terrain. Its main road forms a spine, with smaller lanes branching off at uneven angles. Printed in black and white, it has an organic, almost botanical look, very unlike the grids of planned cities. It suits anyone who knows the hills and wants a quieter record of them.

Linear town centre
The busiest part of town is strung along its main road. Houses and shops line both sides, so the centre looks like a long, narrow band.
Streams through the valley
Small watercourses run along the valley floors. Their thin lines echo the direction of the roads and help explain why the town takes the shape it does.
