Marand lies in East Azerbaijan province, north-west of Tabriz, on the route that leads towards the Aras river and the border. On a map, the town spreads over a plain framed by mountains. Its main axis follows the regional road, and the streets branch off it into residential quarters. Walled gardens and orchards border the built-up area.
The town has long been a stop on the route between Tabriz and the lands to the north, and that function still shows in its layout. The main thoroughfares are long and direct. The older fabric of lanes and courtyard houses lies close to the centre, and newer neighbourhoods extend outward in a more regular pattern.

Near the centre, the street pattern becomes denser and more irregular. These lanes and small blocks mark the older parts of the town.
