Marapanim lies in the northeast of Pará, in the coastal region known as the Salgado, where rivers meet the Atlantic through wide estuaries. From above, the town sits beside the Marapanim River, with streets arranged in a simple grid near the waterfront. Beyond it, mangroves and tidal channels create an intricate pattern of water and land.
The town is known in Pará as one of the centres of carimbó, the traditional music and dance of the region, and it hosts a festival devoted to it. Fishing and small-scale farming remain important, and communities along the coast and river are connected by roads and waterways.
