The cantonment
The former garrison area has wide roads and spacious plots laid out in a regular plan, clearly distinct from the dense and irregular streets of the older town.

Mardan Map Poster & Print
Mardan lies in the Peshawar Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on a broad plain watered by irrigation canals and by streams flowing down from the hills to the north. From above, the city is a dense core of streets and markets spreading outward along the main roads, surrounded by a patchwork of fields where sugarcane, wheat and tobacco are grown.
The city grew around a cantonment established in the nineteenth century as the home of the Corps of Guides, a well-known frontier regiment, and the cantonment's more orderly layout still stands apart from the tighter streets of the old town. A stream known as the Kalpani runs past the city, adding a winding line to the map.
Mardan lies at the heart of the ancient region of Gandhara. Nearby are the Buddhist monastery ruins of Takht-i-Bahi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the rock edicts of the emperor Ashoka at Shahbaz Garhi. A Mardan map poster sets the city within its valley, showing the pattern of roads, canals and fields that surrounds it.

Kalpani stream
This stream winds past the city, its curving course standing out against the straight lines of roads and canals that dominate the surrounding plain.
Canal-fed fields
Around the city, irrigation canals divide the land into a fine patchwork of fields, giving the outer parts of the map an even, textured pattern.
