Marietta is the seat of Cobb County, northwest of Atlanta, and its map is organised around one old centre. Marietta Square sits at the core, with a park in the middle and short blocks around it. From there the older streets run outward in no strict grid, then open into the curving roads and cul-de-sacs of the suburbs that grew up around the town.
Two lines cut through this pattern. The railway runs through the historic centre, a reminder of the line that shaped the town in the nineteenth century. To the east, Interstate 75 runs north and south as a broad band with large interchanges. Between them sit neighbourhoods of different ages, and on paper you can read that age in how regular or loose the streets are.
To the northwest the streets thin out where Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park begins, a wooded ridge that shows up as open ground on the map. Locals give directions by the Big Chicken, a roadside landmark on Cobb Parkway. The interstate crosses the eastern side of the city as a heavy line with looping ramps. It separates the older town from the commercial strips and newer development toward Atlanta.
