Martapura lies in South Kalimantan, on the Indonesian part of Borneo, close to Banjarbaru and within easy reach of the port city of Banjarmasin. The Martapura River winds through the town in wide loops and shapes much of the map. Streets follow its banks, bridges link the two sides and the land around it is low and wet.
The town is famous for diamonds and gemstones. Alluvial diamond mining has been carried out in the region for generations, and Martapura's gem market is one of the best known in Indonesia, drawing buyers for diamonds, stones and jewellery. The mines are outside the town, but the trade gives the centre its character.
Martapura is also known as a centre of Islamic learning, with many pesantren and a large mosque at its heart, and it has been called the Serambi Mekkah, the Verandah of Mecca, of the region.
