Ridge-following roads
Roads trace the ridges and contours of the hills, curving continuously and giving the whole map a soft, flowing structure instead of a grid.

Matiri Map Poster & Print
Matiri is in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, in the highland country east of Lake Nyasa. This is hilly terrain, and on a map the land's shape determines almost everything. Roads follow ridgelines and contours rather than straight lines, and homes and farm plots spread along them, so the settlement takes on a branching, organic form.
The surrounding highlands are farmed intensively, with small fields and tree crops dividing the slopes into an irregular mosaic. Streams run down the valleys between the ridges, drawing thin lines that feed into larger rivers downstream. A few main routes connect the area with the district centres of Ruvuma, and footpaths link the many scattered homesteads.
A Matiri map poster captures this highland pattern: winding roads, branching streams and settlement following the ridges. In black and white the result is quietly intricate, very different from the grid of a planned town, and a meaningful image for families from the area and for anyone who has lived or worked in southern Tanzania.

Valley streams
Small streams run down between the ridges, their branching lines filling the lower ground and hinting at the steep terrain around the settlement.
Hillside farms
Homesteads and fields spread along the slopes in a scattered pattern, creating a fine, irregular texture across the highland landscape.
