Mělník stands in Central Bohemia on a promontory overlooking one of the most important river junctions in the Czech Republic, where the Vltava flows into the Elbe. From above, the historic town sits on the high ground at the southern edge of the confluence, while the rivers and their floodplain spread out below in wide, flat curves.

The Church of St Peter and Paul next to the castle has an ossuary in its crypt, and from the terraces there are views across the plain toward Říp hill.
