Motril is the main town on Granada's Costa Tropical, a short distance inland from the Mediterranean. On a map the old centre forms a dense knot of streets on rising ground. The flat delta plain of the Guadalfeo River spreads out to the west, and the port district of Puerto de Motril sits apart on the coast to the south. Mountains rise steeply behind, squeezing the town between slope and sea.
For centuries the plain around Motril was planted with sugar cane, and the town was one of Europe's centres of sugar production. Its old mills and a museum still record that history. Today the mild subtropical climate supports crops such as avocados, mangoes and custard apples, many grown in greenhouses across the coastal plain. The port handles trade and ferry routes to North Africa.
