Muling lies in the south-east of Heilongjiang province, not far from the border with Russia. The town stretches along the valley of the Muling River, from which it takes its name, and the map shows how closely the terrain controls its shape. The built-up area follows the river in a long, narrow band, with ridges and wooded hills rising on both sides.
Within the valley floor, streets are laid out in a fairly regular pattern and cross the river on several bridges. Beyond the edges of town the landscape turns to farmland on the flatter ground and forest on the slopes, a pattern repeated across this part of north-east China.
