Nāgar Karnūl is the headquarters of its district in southern Telangana, set in the open granite country of the Deccan plateau. From above, the town shows a compact older centre with irregular lanes, surrounded by newer layouts that follow the main roads outward. Beyond them lies a wide farming landscape of fields, scattered boulders and irrigation tanks.
The district stretches south toward the Nallamala Hills and the Krishna River, an area known for dense forest and the Amrabad Tiger Reserve. The town itself lies well north of the forest, but its roads connect it to that wilder country as well as to Mahbubnagar and Hyderabad.
