Nanma sits in the uplands of central Shandong, in the Yimeng mountain country, and serves as the seat of Yiyuan County within Zibo. From above, the town reads as a compact built area fitted into a valley floor, its streets following the lie of the land rather than an imposed grid. Ridges and wooded slopes surround it, so the edge of the town is defined as much by terrain as by roads.
The upper reaches of the Yi River begin in this part of Shandong, which is where Yiyuan takes its name, and water shapes the plan.
