Lakeside setting
Nikel stands beside a lake, and its irregular shoreline curls around the edge of the town. On the poster the water frames the streets with a soft, organic outline.

Nikel Map Poster & Print
Nikel lies far above the Arctic Circle in the Murmansk region of Russia, a few kilometres from the border with Norway. The town sits on the shore of a lake in hilly tundra country, and its map is compact and orderly: a planned centre of apartment blocks and straight streets, an industrial zone beside it, and then an open landscape of water, rock and low vegetation.
The town takes its name from nickel. Mining in the area began in the 1930s, when Petsamo belonged to Finland, and the settlement later grew around a large smelter. For decades its emissions marked the surrounding land, and the smelter's closure in 2020 was a turning point for the town. Nikel is the administrative centre of the Pechengsky district.
A Nikel map poster reduces this setting to its essentials. The regular blocks of the town, the shoreline of the lake and the few roads leading into the tundra become fine lines on a wide, quiet ground. The contrast between a dense planned grid and the empty northern land around it gives the poster a stark, graphic strength.

Planned Soviet centre
The core of Nikel is a grid of apartment blocks and straight streets, laid out as a single plan. From above it reads as a tight, geometric block set in the tundra.
Border country
The Norwegian border lies only a short distance away. Much of the map around the town is open, lightly marked land, typical of the far north-west of Russia.

Miért Nikel?
Egy térkép, ami jelent valamit
Nikel is a place people rarely forget, whether they grew up there, worked at the smelter or passed through on a journey across the Arctic. A map keeps that remote, particular geography in view, long after the move south.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the years you lived there, and set the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free 900 px watermarked preview lets you check the layout before buying the $9 files.
