Two-river confluence
The Fox River comes in from the north and joins the Illinois, giving the map a strong central junction that divides the town into distinct sections joined by bridges.

Ottawa Map Poster & Print
Ottawa sits in LaSalle County where the Fox River flows into the Illinois River. On a map, the two rivers form a clear Y, and the town lies in and around it: a regular grid of streets on the flat land, bridges linking the banks, and bluffs and wooded slopes along the water.
Water shaped the town. The Illinois and Michigan Canal, finished in 1848 to connect Lake Michigan with the Mississippi river system, runs through Ottawa, and the town grew as a stop on it. Ottawa is also where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held the first of their seven debates in 1858, in what is now Washington Square.
An Ottawa map poster shows that combination of prairie order and river geography. The grid meets the curves of two rivers and the straight line of the canal, and the blocks change direction where the water pushes them. It's a small city, but its plan says a lot about how the Midwest was settled.

I&M Canal line
The historic Illinois and Michigan Canal passes through town as a thin straight channel, a nineteenth-century engineering line that still stands out against the natural curves of the rivers.
Washington Square
A single open block in the downtown grid marks the square where the first Lincoln–Douglas debate took place in 1858. It's a small shape with a large place in American history.
