Puerto Berrío stands on the west bank of the Magdalena River, Colombia's main river, in the warm lowlands of Antioquia. The map is dominated by the river itself, a broad channel with islands and side branches. The town's grid runs along the bank, and wetlands and open land spread out behind it.
The town was founded as Antioquia's river port. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it became the end of the Antioquia Railway, which linked Medellín with the Magdalena and, through it, to the Caribbean coast. Goods and people moved between train and boat here, and the town took shape around that connection.
