Puerto Varas lies on the southwestern shore of Lake Llanquihue, one of the largest lakes in Chile. On a map the lake dominates everything: a vast open surface to the east and north, with the town gathered along its edge. A waterfront road follows the curve of the shore, and the streets behind it climb a hill before spreading into newer neighbourhoods.
The town grew with German immigration to the region in the nineteenth century. Wooden houses from that period still shape its identity, as does the red-roofed Church of the Sacred Heart on the hill above the centre. Across the water rises the near-perfect cone of the Osorno volcano. A Puerto Varas map poster shows the town exactly as it sits, at the edge of that great expanse of water.
In monochrome the lake becomes a large, calm field of empty space, which gives the design a strong, almost minimalist balance. The shoreline, the small bays and the curving streets on the hill carry all the detail. The result feels as much about the water as about the town itself.
