Punganūru is a town in Chittoor district in the far south of Andhra Pradesh, near the borders with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It sits on the uplands of the Deccan plateau, where the ground rises and falls gently and outcrops of rock break up the farmland. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets, and roads radiate out from it toward neighbouring towns and villages.
The town is widely known for the Punganur cattle, one of the smallest cattle breeds in the world, named after the area where it was traditionally raised. The breed has drawn national attention in recent years through conservation efforts. The surrounding land is agricultural, and water tanks and field boundaries are visible across the wider landscape.
