Ruhango sits in the hills of Rwanda's Southern Province, on the national road that links Kigali with Huye. From above, the town is a long cluster. The core is densest where the highway passes, and from there smaller roads and footpaths branch outward, following the contours of the ridges and quickly giving way to farmland. Almost everything on the map can be traced back to that one road.
Rwanda's nickname, the land of a thousand hills, is easy to read here. Tracks that hug the contours, curving valley floors and scattered homesteads give the map an organic texture, very different from a planned grid. Most of the surrounding land is farmed in small plots, so few streets run far before they turn into field paths across the slopes.
Ruhango is the seat of the district of the same name and a market centre for the countryside around it.
