Saint-Avertin lies immediately south of Tours in the Indre-et-Loire department, on the banks of the Cher shortly before it joins the Loire. The river forms the northern boundary of the commune, and on the map its channels, islands and riverside green spaces create a broad, flowing band along the top of the town.
South of the river, the land rises gently, and the street pattern shifts from an older core near the water to later residential neighbourhoods built in curving roads and cul-de-sacs. Main routes towards Tours cross the Cher on bridges, and the suburban fabric runs continuously into neighbouring communes.
