Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is surrounded by lakes, and they define its map. The largest, the Schweriner See, stretches along the city's eastern side, while smaller lakes such as the Pfaffenteich and the Ostorfer See lie within or close to the centre. Streets bend around shorelines, and whole districts take their shape from the water between them.
Schwerin Castle stands on an island between the Schweriner See and the Burgsee, linked to the town by bridges and surrounded by formal gardens. In 2024 the former ducal residence and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
