Siddhapur lies in Patan district in northern Gujarat, on the banks of the Saraswati River. On the map, the river's wide, often dry bed runs along the edge of the town. The dense old quarters sit beside it as a maze of narrow, winding lanes. Newer neighbourhoods and main roads spread outwards across the flat plain, surrounded by farmland.
The town is known for the ruins of the Rudra Mahalaya, a large temple complex built under the Chaulukya (Solanki) rulers. Only fragments of it still stand. Siddhapur is also an important Hindu pilgrimage site linked to rituals for mothers. It is famous, too, for its Dawoodi Bohra quarter, where rows of colourful, richly decorated houses line the streets built in the early twentieth century.
