Kaladan estuary
The river widens dramatically as it approaches the sea, a large open shape beside the town that dominates the map and sets its scale.

Sittwe Map Poster & Print
Sittwe is the capital of Rakhine State in western Myanmar, built at the mouth of the Kaladan River where it opens into the Bay of Bengal. On a map the town sits on a low tongue of land between the wide estuary and the sea, with streets laid out in a loose grid and water visible on nearly every side of the frame.
Known during British rule as Akyab, the town grew in the nineteenth century as a port for rice exports. Its plan still leans toward the water, with a waterfront along the river and a road running down to the tip of the peninsula, where the estuary meets the open bay. Around the built-up area the land dissolves into tidal creeks and flat fields.
A Sittwe map poster is defined by water as much as by streets. The broad estuary, the coastline facing the bay and the fine branching channels inland give the composition a striking outline, while the town's grid fills the land between them. Rendered in black and white, it becomes a clear drawing of a place shaped entirely by its river mouth.

Seaward tip
The land narrows toward a point where river and bay meet, so the map ends in a sharp corner of open water on its southern side.
Tidal channels
Beyond the built-up area, creeks and channels wind through low, flat land, adding a delicate network of lines around the edges of the town.

Miért Sittwe?
Egy térkép, ami jelent valamit
For people from Rakhine State, Sittwe is the main town of the coast, and a map of its streets and shoreline carries memories of home. It also appeals to anyone drawn to estuary landscapes, where the boundary between land and water is never quite fixed.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example using the old name Akyab or a family date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as a $9 digital download or a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
