North Sea Canal
The broad, straight waterway crosses the map from east to west. With quays and docks along both sides, it forms the strongest line in the composition.

Velsen-Zuid Map Poster & Print
Velsen-Zuid lies on the south bank of the North Sea Canal in North Holland. It is part of the municipality of Velsen, between Haarlem and the port town of IJmuiden. From above, the canal is the dominant line: a wide, straight waterway running east to west, with docks, ferries and industrial quays along it. South of the water, the map opens into parks, lakes and the edge of the coastal dunes.
The canal opened in the 1870s and connects Amsterdam to the North Sea. The sea locks at IJmuiden, a short distance to the west, are among the largest in the world. Road tunnels under the canal link Velsen-Zuid with the northern bank, and the Spaarnwoude recreation area, with its lakes and paths, stretches away to the southeast.
A Velsen-Zuid map poster shows a place defined by contrast: the straight engineering of the canal and its harbour basins, the curved paths and water of the recreation land, and the scattered streets of the village itself. It is a distinctive image of how the Dutch live with water, compact and precise in black and white.

IJmuiden locks
At the western end of the canal, the lock complex appears as a set of parallel chambers and piers. It is one of the most recognisable engineered shapes in the Netherlands.
Spaarnwoude
To the southeast, the lakes, meadows and cycling routes of the recreation area form a soft, open landscape of curves and ponds.
