Watthana is one of the central districts of Bangkok, and its map is organised around one long line: Sukhumvit Road, running east from the city centre. Dozens of numbered side streets, the sois, branch off it to the north. Together they create a comb-like pattern that is typical of this part of the city and easy to recognise from above.
Khlong Saen Saep, one of Bangkok's main canals, runs along the northern edge of the district. Express boats on the canal carry commuters toward the old city. Between the canal and Sukhumvit, streets such as Thong Lo and Ekkamai form major north–south axes, lined with offices, apartments and restaurants.
Unlike older parts of Bangkok, Watthana has no historic core. The density of its map comes from a tight mesh of sois, dead ends and small connecting lanes.
