Lutherstadt Wittenberg on the Elbe is where Martin Luther is said to have posted his Ninety-five Theses in 1517, starting the Protestant Reformation. The Castle Church, Luther's house and other sites of the period form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The painter Lucas Cranach the Elder also lived and worked here.
The old town has an unusually clear, elongated shape. Its main streets run east to west, with the Castle Church at the western end and the Luther House near the eastern end, the market square and town church between them. Green belts trace the line of the old fortifications, and the Elbe with its wide floodplain runs just to the south.
