Wittmund is the administrative centre of its district in East Frisia, Lower Saxony. The town itself is compact, with an older centre of short streets surrounded by newer residential areas, but its municipal area stretches north across flat, drained land almost to the Wadden Sea coast. On a larger map that gives it an unusual, elongated reach.
The land is shaped by water management. Straight drainage channels, dykes and field lines divide the green country into long strips, and the small Harle river runs toward the coast. At the northern end, the harbour villages of Carolinensiel and Harlesiel belong to Wittmund, where the land stops at the sea dyke and the tidal flats begin.
