Wrexham sits in north-east Wales, a few miles from the English border, where the lowland of the Dee valley meets the first hills to the west. From above, the old centre forms a compact knot of streets around St Giles' Church. Terraced housing spreads out from there, and the A483 runs along the western side toward Chester and Oswestry.
Wrexham was granted city status in 2022. Its tall church tower is one of the landmarks of Wales, and Elihu Yale, the benefactor of Yale University, is buried in the churchyard.
